Giant's Cave

It was boring work. The short of it was the higher level groups didn't want to do it because it was so dull. Beneath them. Not worth wasting their great skills when lower-leveled teams like Ohli & Flame to do it.
The job? Clearing out the fauna that inhabited the caves that led to what was known as "Giant's Cave." Ohliana had never been inside the main caves so she wasn't sure if there were actually giants in them. But these outlying caves held all kinds of monster annoyances. So she and and the Fire Mage, FlameStrike were hired to deal with it.
It payed well, especially considering they were allowed to keep whatever loot they found, and their expenses were pretty much nil. All she needed was some spare healing potions and some recharging potions just in case she actually had to use her magical skills, which she rarely did while with her traveling companion Flame. He didn't even need the recharge potions because he had his familiar, a fat white cat with a big stupid face that had the magical ability to recharge Flame nearly constantly.
Flame's trademark FireBall spell was more than enough for almost anything in these caves, he didn't even technically need Ohli for healing. But he did need her for looting.
He was only in it for the hunt. He wanted all the loot, but he certainly didn't want to do all the monotonous checking of dens, dead bodies and nests for the things that would get them the coins. So it was her job to do it. He had given her a decent sword that gave her magical abilities a small boost but for this job was used to clear webs, break open caches, and cut open the roasted bodies of the creatures Flame's FireBall brought down.
She could skirt around the living things that were sleepily unaware of her presence easily enough, darting in and out of the caves.
There were the Kranrot - large shaggy bear-like creatures that looked (and smelled) rather like they were decomposing bodies, and indeed sheets of their skin often sloughed off and could be used to make a rather unique kind of leather. She collected them if they looked fresh enough.
The oversized wolf-like Halingke left bones of their prey in their dens, which was rather useful to most schools of magic and weapon-makers.
Hamrut Spiders, taller than she and a bit terrifying, hoarded anything that they considered shiny that they used to attract prey into their silken webs, where they could eat them at their leisure. She was finding lovely gemstones, oriharuken ore, beads, stones of purity and even some metals.
The Paliotes were very interesting creatures. They reminded her of the whill-o-the-wisps that used to be found near her home in Talking Island. They had a golden glow and they floated around seemingly aimlessly, until they decided you were a threat and attacked. Their waste products became an interesting kind of charcoal.
She stayed clear away from the Guardians. They looked rather like small white tigers but they had two spine-y creatures that accompanied them at all times. They had some kind of symbiotic relationship and were never apart. She didn't know a lot about them, except they were highly aggressive and territorial when it came to humans.
Then there were the Yintzu. They were highly disturbing. To her they resembled brains without bodies. They just hovered and quivered. They attacked with electric shocks when disturbed. She tried not to disturb them.
But she didn't have to worry a whole lot, as FlameStrike's FireBall was highly efficient cutting down the population of monsters.
She did her best to stay close to Flame, but he mowed through things so fast. Killing one creature after another after another while she had to linger behind to crack open Paliotes and go through the leavings.
She was looking through a Halingke den and suddenly heard Flame's obnoxious cat squawk. She was alarmed at how far away it sounded. She dropped the half-chewed leg bone she was holding and ran out of the den. She went as fast as she could through the caves towards the cats' cries.
She was reasonably certain she was going in the correct direction based on the litter of strewn bodies when she rounded a corner and nearly ran into a guardian. It's bright yellow eyes regarded her carefully as it's two spiked companions rose into the air. She didn't wait to see what it would do. She only had one attack spell and it was only useful on the undead. It was worse than useless on living things ~ it would just anger the guardian. She heard it padding swiftly after her as she put on a new burst of speed. Her only hope was to get to Flame and his FireBall.
The cat's squawks had ceased - it was probably dead. She felt even more sure of that fact when she heard Flame curse loudly as his supply of recharging magic left him. But she could hear him and followed his angry voice until she found him.
His hair was longish, reaching his chin when he was calm, but it was flying around his head as he conjured up another large ball of flame and hurled it at one of the three Halingke that were trying to get close enough to him to bite. Their steel-gray bodies seemed to shine when they reflected the fireball's light. One went down and she called out to him.
He glanced at her in irritation, then his eyes widened with surprise at her entourage. He immediately turned and lobed the next tiny sun at her. It moved past her and hit the Guardian in the face. It roared in anger.
The two remaining Halingke started ripping at Flame's dark purple robes.and she stopped running. Flame had the Guardian's full attention now and she couldn't heal and run at the same time. She hadn't the concentration or the schooling to attempt it. She worked her healing magic and aimed for Flame. She kept showering him with healing magic while he threw fireball after fireball. A Halingke fell, the Guardian forced backwards, the other Halingke fell, then Flame was able to concentrate his efforts on the Guardian. As the white tiger fell, it's spiney companions burst into flames.
A sudden jolt of pain hit her square in the back and her last healing spell was interrupted as she collapsed to the ground. She couldn't even cry out. She rolled over to see the Yintzu above her with the slimy coil of a tentacle reaching out to her. It shocked her again and all she could do was watch as her body went rigid.
Then a fireball flew right over her face and engulfed the Yintzu. A strange, static-like crackling noise emanated from the pulsing blob before it exploded, covering her with gloop.
She slowly got up while trying to catch her breath, and then tried to wipe the gelatinous blobs off her face with shaking hands.
Her back hurt terribly while she went to FlameStrike.
"Are you all right?" she asked.
"All good," he replied. He was already casting the spell to bring his familiar back. The fat fluffy cat was a spell to begin with, so it's death was never a big deal, except the irritation it caused. The cat materialized and instantly began recharging Flame.
She wiped at her face once more time to clear the chunky Yintzu snot out of her vision. She would need a thorough wash when they were done in these caves.
Flame flashed his trouble-maker smile at her while he began his FireBall magic again and started walking into the next cave, while she sighed heavily and started looking through the Halingke's den for loot.
A boring job was a little less boring with FlameStrike around.
